What to Expect on Your Fly Fishing Adventure

Your journey begins with a scenic horseback ride into the Bob Marshall Wilderness, where you’ll set up camp along the South Fork of the Flathead. Each day, you’ll wade or float the river, casting for trophy cutthroat trout in crystal-clear waters. With professional guides leading the way, you’ll have access to some of the best fishing spots in the country while enjoying the beauty and tranquility of Montana’s backcountry.

  • What kind of fish will I catch?

    Our fly fishing trips focus on catching native westslope cutthroat trout, one of the most sought-after species in Montana. You may also encounter bull trout (catch-and-release only) and other wild trout species.

  • Do I need to bring my own fishing gear?

    We recommend bringing your own fly rod, reel, and tackle, but if you don’t have gear, let us know in advance—we may have some available for rent. Your guide will also provide recommendations on the best flies and equipment for the trip.

  • What type of flies work best on the South Fork of the Flathead?

    Dry flies work exceptionally well here, with hopper patterns, stimulators, and attractor dry flies being local favorites. Nymphs and streamers can also be effective depending on conditions.

  • Do I need a fishing license?

    Yes, all anglers are required to have a Montana fishing license and a Bob Marshall Wilderness permit for fishing in the South Fork of the Flathead River. These can be purchased online before your trip.

  • How physically demanding is this trip?

    This is a backcountry adventure that requires riding horseback into camp and wading through rivers while fishing. Moderate fitness is recommended, but we can adjust the trip to accommodate different skill levels.
