The True Spirit of the Mountains
The Chinese Wall Pack Trip is an 7-day roving camp adventure travel trip, which features a horseback ride to the spectacular 13-mile long Chinese Wall along the Continental Divide. This wilderness travel trip has several layover days, which provide a break in horseback riding and allow for some spectacular fly fishing in the streams and high country lakes. This is also a photographer and hiker paradise!
The Chinese Wall is a long limestone cliff in the Bob Marshall, standing 1,000 feet high and extending for 22 miles, from Haystack Mountain to Larch Hill Pass. Stunning views of the White River valley, Swan Mountain range and Flathead Mountain range can be seen from various points atop the Wall, as well as beautiful geological features that demonstrate how the Chinese Wall was formed over 150 million years ago.

Chinese Wall Itinerary
Itineraries are Subject to Change!!
Day 1 – Pack and Ride
We will pack up at the Benchmark trailhead (west of Augusta) and mount up for the horseback trail ride to our first camp site at Indian Point. We will stop for lunch at the “pack bridge” and arrive at camp late afternoon. You can relax as camp is set up and dinner is prepared. You will enjoy eating by our open campfire and gazing at more stars than you ever dreamed existed.
Day 2 – Explore
This is a layover day at Indian Point with the opportunity to fly fish, explore, hike, horseback trail ride or simply relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery. This is a good opportunity to use your camera as the scenery is breathtaking!
Day 3 – Saddle Up and Ride
We horseback ride to our next camp at Moose Creek. You will see spectacular scenery as we ride along the “Wall.” You should see a mountain goat or two and maybe some elk, deer and maybe even a bear. Keep your camera ready!
Day 4 – Explore
This is another layover day. Explore the wonders of the Chinese Wall up close and personal with a hike up the “Wall.” Bring your camera; you will be on top of the world! You will see many varieties of wildflowers – we counted 72 varieties one year.
Day 5 – Away We Go Again
You are a pro in the saddle now. It’s nice to take a horseback trail ride down to our next camp on the banks of the north fork of the Sun River. The Sun River offers excellent fly fishing for both Cutthroat and Rainbow trout.
Day 6 – Pretty Ride
It is a pretty ride as we proceed to our final camp at Pretty Prairie, a big meadow along the south fork of the Sun River. An evening of relaxation or fishing along the banks of the river is great for reflecting on all the beauty and adventure you have seen.
Day 7 – Home Again
After a hearty breakfast and a leisurely morning, we will pack up and take the final horseback trail ride the final six miles back to the Benchmark trailhead. This completes the wilderness travel loop of our high mountain adventure.

June has the potential for snow, especially at higher elevations. The rest of the summer, you’re likely to get rained on at least once during your trip. To be fully prepared, please follow the recommended clothing list closely. See below for average summer temperatures for the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex:
